(MISSISSAUGA) — A free community screening clinic is being held on Saturday, July 23rd for youth aged 10-18 years who are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. The clinic starts at 8:30 a.m. at The Credit Valley Hospital’s Diabetes Care Centre, 2200 Eglinton Avenue West, Mississauga, and will last for about three hours.
It was once thought that only adults got Type 2 Diabetes, but today more kids and teenagers are being diagnosed with the disease than ever before. In the next 15 years, it is believed that Type 2 Diabetes in children will increase by up to 50 per cent around the world.
If a child has two or more of the risk factors below, they may be at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes:
To attend the free screening clinic on July 23, you must register by calling 905-813-1100 ext. 5098. Please bring your child’s OHIP card. Your child must be fasting for 12 hours (no food or drink, except water, after 8:30 p.m. the night before). Free parking will be available.
The clinic is being offered as part of the Kids Type 2 AWARD Program (Actions to Win at Reducing Diabetes), operated jointly by The Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium Health Centre and William Osler Health System. This innovative program aims to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, help manage the disease, and help participants (youth and their caregivers) to live a healthy lifestyle.
