Ethics at the Credit Valley Hospital

Code of Ethics

 

The Credit Valley Hospital is governed and guided by ethical principles. These principles are demonstrated in a variety of hospital documents including our Mission, Vision, Values statement. Our values as outlined in this statement are: respect, leadership, teamwork, accountability and partnership. Each value, as defined, adds shape and form to our culture of ethics, which in turn guides professional and clinical practice.

In addition, key ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence (do no harm), justice and professional integrity are articulated and defined in the “Ethics at Credit Valley Hospital: Key Principles” document. This document was created to guide decision making, judgment, and problem solving as it pertains to patient care.

The organization has a well-developed, solid policy framework for effectively integrating awareness of ethics and standards of care. This framework consists of standards, policies and protocols, including but not limited to:

• Consent to Treatment – Policy
• Substitute Decision Making as Related to Consent to Treatment - Policy
• Assessment of Capacity – Policy
• Responding to Demands for Inappropriate Treatment – Policy
• Disclosure of a Critical Safety Event or Unanticipated Outcome – Policy
• Privacy of Personal Health Information – Policy
• Confidentiality of Patient/Employee and Corporate Related Information – Policy

In addition, a Code of Conduct Policy was implemented in 2001, which guides behaviors and identifies the boundaries of professional conduct.

Lastly, all healthcare professionals are guided by the standards and codes of their own self-regulating colleges and professional associations, as well as by additional provisions in provincial legislation (e.g., Nursing Act, Social Work and Social Service Work Act, Regulated Health Professions Act, Management Regulations under the Public Hospitals Act, etc.)
